Domain Naming Rules

.CO.UK

Used by a commercial business. E.g. a domain name for ABC Services could read www.abc.co.uk

  • Any person may own any number of names with the .co.uk suffix administration of the name.
  • Names can have a minimum of three characters.
  • Two authoritative name servers must be working such that a zone server transfer may be possible for each within 24 hours. (We maintain the servers.)
  • First come, first served subject to the above.

.ORG.UK

Organisations which do not satisfactorily 'fit' into any other subdomains of U.K. Includes; charities, trade unions, political parties, community groups, educational councils, professional institutions, etc. E.g. a domain name for ABC Charity could read www.abc.org.uk

  • Any person may own any number of names with the .org.uk suffix administration of the name.
  • Names can have a minimum of three characters.
  • Two authoritative name servers must be working such that a zone server transfer may be possible for each within 24 hours. (We maintain the servers.)
  • First come, first served subject to the above.

.LTD.UK or .PLC.UK

A limited or public limited company in the UK. The .ltd.uk and .plc.uk domains are intended to allow a unique mapping between company names registered under The Companies Act with Companies House And DNS name. E.g. a domain name for ABC Services Ltd would read www.abcservices.ltd.uk or www.abcservices.plc.uk

  • One name per company name registered at Companies to allow a unique mapping between companies.
  • The name shall correspond exactly to the registration name save for characters not in the 'allowable' set which shall be interpreted as below and the 'reserved' words.
  • White space between words shall either be ignored or replaced by a single hyphen '-' (e.g. Domain Name = Domain-Name or DomainName)
  • All other characters shall be removed.
  • Company names written in non English character set are not allowable in this version. The only characters allowed are the letters A to Z, a to z, the numbers 0-9 and hyphen. These will be known as 'allowable' set. This version of rules will not allow these applications to be allocated to a name.
  • Unlimited companies registered under the Companies act, unincorporated bodies, partnerships and bodies incorporated under other legislation are not eligible for any entry in to .ltd.uk or .plc.uk.
  • Certain words will be removed from the registered company name before the DNS name is generated, i.e. 'reserved' words. They are 'limited, public limited company' and the Welsh language version along with the abbreviations of these words, e.g. ltd and plc.

.COM

A commercial business registered on the American Index which is seen as the world leader. E.g. a domain name for ABC Services could read www.abc.com

  • Any person may own any number of names with the .com suffix administration of the name.
  • Names can have a minimum of three characters.
  • Two authoritative name servers must be working such that a zone server transfer may be possible for each within 24 hours. (We maintain the servers.)
  • First come, first served subject to the above.
