Jargon Buster

Unravel the 'gobbledegook' and technical mystery of the Internet, with this guide.

24/7

24 hours a day, 7 days a week your site is hosted, running and open for business.

.NET Framework

.NET is Microsoft's solution for Web services. Web services allow applications to communicate and share data over the Internet. Ask your web designer if your web site uses .NET.

Basic and Advanced Password Protection

You can password protect areas of your website, and authenticate users from a text file or database. This can be achieved without any scripting, and is controlled by the server giving high security and a professional image to visitors.

Domain Name

The address for people to locate your business on the www (Internet) it is usually registered with the same or similar name to your business name or range of products. You can register as many different names that all point to your website, this helps you 'catch' more hits to your website.

Dual Hosting

Hosting is done on 2 computers (or should be) so if one breaks down your website will still be online.

e-mail

Having POP3 e-mail allows you to use professional e-mail addresses such as sales@yourdomain.co.uk. It also allows you to receive e-mails using popular e-mail programs such as Outlook, Outlook Express and many more.

By having more than one e-mail name set up i.e. sales@yourdomain.co.uk and support@yourdomain.co.uk it allows you to pre-sort your unread mail making sure the relevant person views the e-mails. This is done using the filtering capability of your e-mail program.

e-mail Auto Responders

An e-mail auto responder allows you to automatically send a response e-mail to incoming e-mail, this response is written by you. This can be used on a particular address such as sales@yourdomain.co.uk to thank customers for their interest in your business.

e-mail Forwarding

Incoming e-mail can be forwarded to any existing e-mail address. This is useful if you want all your e-mail to come to the same mailbox, rather than having to check several mailboxes separately.

e-mail virus scanning

You can set-up automatic virus scanning of all e-mail sent to a domain name. Incoming messages are checked before they reach your inbox.

Front Page 2002 Extensions

If you use Microsoft Front Page to design or edit your web pages, you will need to install FrontPage extensions on your domain. These extensions simplify the uploading and maintenance of the site, and also allow certain Front Page specific components to work correctly like site search for example.

FTP Access

File Transfer Protocol - allows a user on one computer to transfer files to and from another computer. This is a method used to publish your web site so people can see it on the Internet.

We allow you to do this yourself or we can do it for you. If you want to upload your own website onto the Internet (your web server) the first thing you will need is to get yourself an FTP program. There are several trial versions on the Internet which you can download and use, just type in 'FTP programs' into a search engine and find a web site offering downloads of such programs.

You will then need to know several pieces of information to enter into the program before you can upload your web pages such as a user name and a password. This can be obtained from us if we are your web-hosting company.

You can then upload your pages to your website. They can then be viewed on the Internet by entering your domain name into your Internet browser.

History

The Internet evolved in the 1960's when the U.S. Air Force wanted to find out how it could maintain its control over its missiles and bombers, after a nuclear attack. The idea was to build a network of computers that could communicate with each other even if some of the computers on the network were destroyed in the attack. Messages were passed from one computer to another by winding its way through the web of computers (the network) until it ended up in the proper place. Eventually more and more computers joined this network, which came to be known as the 'Internet'.

Hits

Are visitors to your website and these visitors are potential customers.

Internet

Or 'net' became popular from the mid 1990's and allowed anyone with a computer, modem and telephone line to 'talk' to another computer and view websites, which are webpages held on servers anywhere in the world. The Internet is exxtensivley used for commercial transactions, news groups, information, education etc.

ISP

Internet Service Providers (also known as Internet Access Providers) provide access to the Internet through telephone line modems or other technologies. You access the Internet using a modem, a phone line, and an Internet service provider account such as AOL, Freeserve, BT etc

Megabyte

Frequently abbreviated as 'M' or 'MB'. Is a chunk of computer space used to store your web pages. Your web page size will be determined by the amount of text and graphics that are used to design your website. For example, a website that uses mostly graphics will be larger than a website that is mostly text. The larger your web pages are the more Megabytes you will need.

POP3 e-mail

Having POP3 e-mail allows you to use professional e-mail addresses such as sales@yourdomain.co.uk. It also allows you to receive e-mails using popular e-mail programs such as Outlook, Outlook Express and many more.

By having more than one e-mail name set up i.e. sales@yourdomain.co.uk and support@yourdomain.co.uk it allows you to pre-sort your unread mail making sure the relevant person views the e-mails. This is done using the filtering capability of your e-mail program.

Scripting Support

Our web servers support most scripting languages. Using scripting languages such as PERL, PHP, and CGI when developing your web site, allows web developers to write dynamically generated pages that people can interact with. If you are going to use this in your web site you will need to use a hosting company that supports your scripting language. Ask your web designer which scripting languages your web site uses.

SPAM Filtering

Blocks unsolicited e-mails. You can control the sensitivity of the filtering used, and decide what action should be taken when Spam e-mail arrives.

SSL Secure Server

Provides support and allows you to secure transactions between your web site and your customers. Pages that are designated as secure will be encrypted (scrambled) and allow you to set up a credit card payment facility for on-line transactions.

Webhosting

Your webspace, and website are 'hosted' on a huge computer so anyone can access your website. This hosting can be anywhere and virtually every website is hosted. Very few companies actually 'host' their own website since they would need 2 massive, expensive computers.

Webserver

A web server distributes the load over a number of computer servers. If a site you look at is very slow its usually because its not got a web server, therefore the load cannot be shared.

Website Statistics

With Matrix Stats you can view both real-time and historical information about the visitors to your web site.

Webspace
